Financial Literacy Curriculum
The below classes are designed to provide an integrated course of study:
BUDGETING: Students will analyze their spending habits by identifying their needs and wants. Steps on how to budget will be demonstrated. This involves listing incomes and expenses along with tracking their expenditure to avoid NSF and late fees, and other unnecessary charges.
CREDIT MATTERS: Learning how to establish credit is imperative. There's a huge difference in the terms and payment arrangements received by someone with good credit versus the terms for someone with a lower credit score. We teach students how to access their credit report, and how to establish and maintain good credit.
DEBT MANAGEMENT: There's good debt (mortgage), and there is bad debt (car payment). In this example, the mortgage declines and the value of the home typically increases. This is not the case with a vehicle because it usually declines in value. Participants will learn strategies for reducing debt. Suggestions for minimizing student loan debt will also be recommended. In addition, we will provide insight into the credit bureaus' scoring system, and how to handle collection agencies.
SAVINGS: There are several good reasons for maintaining an emergency fund i.e. peace of mind, financial protection and independence, etc. Students will learn how establishing their goals will facilitate their ability to save money. In addition, they will learn how to select the best savings account.
LIFE SKILLS: Buying a car is the 2nd most expensive investment that an individual will purchase. A lack of knowledge can place a loan "under water" leaving the owner paying for the car years beyond its usefulness.
An equally important step for a young adult is selecting the right housing. Where to live, how to select the best amenities, and how to read a lease are details that every young adult needs to understand before living independently.
HOW TO BUY A HOUSE: Buying a home is the most expensive purchase and the most valuable asset that most people will ever make. This class will instruct participants on the buying process from "contract to closing".
